Free software comes in many forms and lisensing agrements. Most software exists as demoware, in other words it is not complet in some way or will expire and become unusable after so many uses or a particular date. Demoware is a great way to check out a product before you buy it. Some demoware has no restrictions and relies on the hounor system that you will pay for what you use (they are covered under the umbrela term  shareware).
